I recently had the chance to attend the opening reception for Recent Walks Alone, an exhibition by ex-professor Doug Kirton, at the Michael Gibson Gallery in London, Ontario. It was a profound moment to reconnect with him and reflect on his impactful career and inspiring work.

Doug Kirton, a long-time professor at the University of Waterloo, has built a notable career focusing on landscapes that evoke a sense of place and contemplation. His works often blend abstraction and reality, creating dreamlike environments that encourage viewers to immerse themselves in their subtle complexity. This latest exhibition features paintings inspired by Laurel Creek in Waterloo, where he transforms photographic references into ethereal landscapes. These pieces are more than mere representations; they transport viewers into realms that feel both familiar and otherworldly, filled with sheltering, comforting qualities.

Seeing his work displayed in the gallery was a moving experience. The interplay of light, color, and texture in his paintings reveals a mastery that invites deep reflection. It was also heartening to speak with Doug Kirton again and hear about the inspirations behind his latest series. Moments like these remind me of the transformative power of art and the enduring influence of great mentors. You can check out my video about my visit to the opening night here.
